 | What can we say? WE agree that Heat Cable is ugly so we designed it to be under the roofing material. This makes it more efficient, more attractive and less susceptible to damage. The next step we took was to change the heat source from 5 watt a foot self regulating heat cable to 1/2 pex hose which is using the equivalent of .5 Watts per foot to do the same thing.Yes you read that right our Hydronic ice dam solution is 10 time more efficient than our heat cable based solution. We do not used extruded aluminum in our system because 1) all that aluminum cost a lot of money, 2) The aluminum uses more energy since you are striving to heat a large mass 3) in order to keep the extruded aluminum costs down they must leave air space since air is an insulator this reduces the amount of energy getting to the roof surface, 4) the roofing materials (Asphalt Shingles, Tile , Slate, Metal) are all thin body masses so if you heat a think mass than you can not get the thinner mass to absorb it so the heat goes straight through the other side.
